Theological Presentation on April 8

All members of the Benedictine community are invited to a free presentation sponsored by St. Benedict's Catholic Church on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in the Atchison Catholic Elementary School (ACES) Chapel.  Fr. Thomas Haake, OMV, will give a presentation on "Moral Principles of End of Life Issues." Fr. Haake is a doctor of moral theology from the Diocese of Kansas City - St. Joseph. His presentation will address: care for the dying, advance directives, redemptive suffering, the definition of "extraordinary means," nutrition and hydration, palliative care and hospice, the threat of euthanasia and the threat of assisted suicide. Communion and Liberation Presentation on April 8
The national leader of Communion and Liberation, Christopher Bacich, will be on the Benedictine College campus on Thursday, April 8.  He will deliver a speech in the O’Malley-McAllister Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. that evening.  His presentation will be on the recent book by Monsignor Luigi Giussani, “The Risk of Education.”  The talk is free and open to the public.

This timely keynote topic will explore pastoral issues and concerns related to the moral principles of caring for the dying, including ordinary and extraordinary means of preserving life, morally obligatory and morally optional care, artificial nutrition and hydration, palliative care, hospice, redemptive suffering, and the risk and threat of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Also included will be the topics of pain management and a review of end-of-life planning documents such as advanced directives and living wills.

Our speakers include Fr. Thomas Haake who acts as the Bishop’s Representative for Healthcare Issues. Prior to coming to the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph last year, Fr. Haake had been teaching courses in Bioethics in Manila at the College of Law, College of Medicine, and was a Pontifical Faculty of Sacred Theology.

Dr. Austin Welsh M.D. will be teaming up with Fr. Thomas Haake to bring even more expertise to this issue. Dr. Welsh is a Geriatric and Family Practice Physician in Overland Park, KS and is the current President of the Kansas City Chapter of the Catholic Medical Association.
